Internships

Why intern through American Culture?

All LSA internships help students attain experiences important to their future careers, but the Department of American Culture's program also allows its interns to simultaneously serve their community. Our strong commitment to social justice means that students can feel confident that the work that they do will matter more than just a line on a résumé. Our interns provide important services, learn new skills, and meet important leaders in southeast Michigan. Those considering careers in health, education, museums, politics, advocacy, or law are particularly well served. Any Michigan student in good standing is welcome to participate.

Typical American Culture Internship Placements Include:

  • American Indian Health and Family Services in Detroit
  • Arab American National Museum
  • Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services
  • Arab Studies Institute
  • Council on American-Islamic relations
  • Iraqi Refugee Assistance Project
  • Jewish family Service
  • Michigan Immigrant Rights Center

American Culture offers opportunities for students to make sure their unpaid internships result in course credit. During the Fall and Winter terms, students may sign up for two credits if doing an average of six hours work/week; three credits if performing 9 hours/week; or four credits if completing 12 hours/week. Depending on the internship placement, students will be registered for AMCULT 388, AMAS 388, ASIANPAM 388, NATIVEAM 388, or LATINOAM 388. Although these courses are not offered in Spring/Summer terms, arrangements can be made for students to still complete summer internships for credit. Contact ac.inq@umich.edu for more information.
