Opportunities - Insect Division

Employment & Volunteering

The Insect Division accepts volunteers who wish to assist us with our collections management, database projects, and other activities where extra hands and minds make a difference. We only ask that volunteers be over the age of 16, and capable of working with fragile materials.

We often have positions open for students that have been awarded College Work-Study grants. Typically, such jobs are 10-15 hours per week, and may involve working with live insect cultures, database entry, specimen illustration, slide-ringing and labeling, image scanning, general collections maintenance, and other tasks that involve working with the collections. Check the listings online on the U-M Student Employment page.

Temporary part-time hourly positions are also often available, especially at the beginning of semesters, and during the summer months. Employees must be over the age of 18, and capable of working with database entry on computers, specimen handling, and working with minimal supervision once trained for a specific task. You do not have to be a U-M student to work in these positions, but preference is given to U-M students.

We are located at 3600 Varsity Drive, which is ca. 5 miles from campus. There is a van service that connects central campus to the RMC that leaves from the parking area behind BSB (by loading docks). There is also a bus route with stops just a short walk from the RMC. This transportation makes it possible to schedule half-days of work. Reach out to Curator Knowles with inquiries (knowlesl@umich.edu).
