Student Positions

Camp Explorations Summer Camp Counselors

Camp Explorations Summer Camp Counselors oversee and are responsible for the general welfare of their group of campers, provide instruction to camp participants for indicated activity or subject, and teach the associated knowledge and skills and assist campers in achieving activity or lesson goals. They are positive role models for children and teens and act in a caring, honest, respectful and responsible manner that is consistent with the mission of the Museum and University. 


Pay is $18/hour and an average of 30 hours/week.

Counselor Responsibilities

  • Attend camp training week of June 1 (Dates and Times TBD)
  • Lead ten weeks of science-themed camp activities for youth ages 4-12 (June 10-Aug 14)
  • Provide daily high-quality customer service to campers and parents
  • Ensure safety of site, activities and participants; report any accidents, injuries and safety concerns
  • Effectively communicate and coordinate with all members of the Camp team to ensure overall success
  • Guide campers in participating successfully in all aspects of camp activities
  • Set a good example for campers in all areas, including cleanliness, punctuality, cleanup, rules, and sportsmanship
  • Prepare for and actively participate in pre-camp training and weekly meetings
  • Observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
  • Work in all weather conditions
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Current certification or ability to be certified in Adult & Child CPR/First Aid, Epi-Pen & Asthma.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Able to receive a clean criminal background check prior to hire and working with youth.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions, walk long distances and lift at least 25 pounds.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous camp experience.  Previous experience working with youth is a plus.  
  • Demonstrated public speaking skills and ability to communicate with enthusiasm
  • Positive and enthusiastic attitude
  • Good organizational skills
  • Experience and ability to work well independently and in a team environment
