I already have international health insurance coverage (from another program, my parent’s coverage, UM GradCare, etc.); do I still have to buy the GeoBlue plan?

YES. The University of Michigan and the College of LSA requires that all students traveling abroad be covered under the GeoBlue travel insurance while overseas.

I am traveling to a country where I am a citizen and am covered by the national health insurance plan, do I still have to purchase the GeoBlue plan?

Typically YES. However, in rare cases, some students are eligible to apply for a waiver. For more information, you can contact UHS-mancare-stuins@med.umich.edu. Please note that in order to qualify for a waiver, the national health insurance must be equal to or better than the UM GeoBlue benefits schedule in every single category.

I am trying to enroll in the GeoBlue health insurance, but I keep getting an error message saying “The 'Valid From' date exceeds your group's policy year, please choose a 'Valid From' date”. What do I do?

Your travel dates are too far in the future to buy the insurance at this time. You can either wait until after September 1st to purchase your insurance (when the policy year starts over) or, if you are in need of your funding sooner, please contact LSATravel@umich.edu for other options.

I’m traveling before / after my University-related trip. Can I purchase additional insurance to cover this time too?

Yes! And we strongly encourage you to do so. When you purchase your insurance, please purchase it from the day you plan to leave the US until you plan to return.
