All individuals traveling abroad with the University of Michigan must follow the guidelines of the UM International Travel Policy.

Global Michigan Travel Designations

UM Travel Restriction Destinations

In restriction areas, travel for university purposes is generally prohibited due to extreme health, safety or security risks. University-related travel for undergraduate students is prohibited. Students cannot be required to participate in activities in this destination. Evacuation of undergraduate students is required (and may be necessary for graduate or professional students).

Undergraduate students are not permitted to travel to Travel Restriction destinations. There are no exceptions to this rule.

UM graduate students may travel to locations with Travel Restrictions for University-related purposes if they complete the requirements outlined on the Global Michigan website.

UM Travel Warning Destinations

In warning areas, travel for university purposes is unadvisable due to a significant level of health, safety or security risks. Students cannot be required to participate in activities in this destination.

The University of Michigan may decide to cancel or suspend programs in Travel Warning Destinations should conditions develop that warrant such action. The University of Michigan can evacuate students within a Travel Warning Destination if the need arises.

UM Travel Health High Risk Destinations

In Travel Health High Risk areas, travel for university purposes is generally prohibited due to high health risks. University-related travel for undergraduate students is prohibited. Students cannot be required to participate in activities in this destination. Evacuation of undergraduate students is required (and may be necessary for graduate or professional students).

Undergraduate students are not permitted to travel to Travel Health High Risk destinations. There are no exceptions to this rule.

UM graduate students may travel to locations with Travel Health High Risk for University-related purposes if they complete the requirements outlined on the Global Michigan website.

UM Travel Health Medium Risk Destinations

In Travel Health medium risk areas, travel for university purposes requires extra precautions due to midlevel health risks.

The University of Michigan may decide to cancel or suspend programs in U-M Travel Health Medium Risk Destinations should conditions worsen to that of a Travel Health High Risk or entry is not possible. The University of Michigan can evacuate students within a Travel Health Medium Risk Destination if the need arises.

U-M Safety and Travel Health Plans

All travellers to Warning, Restriction, Travel Health High Risk, and Travel Health Medium Risk locations must complete either a Safety Plan or a Travel Health Plan prior to departing the United States. Safety/travel health plans MUST be submitted at least three weeks prior to departure. All safety/travel plans must be submited through MCompass.

If going to a Travel Warning or Restriction destination, complete the Individual Travel Safety Plan.

If going to a Travel Health High Risk or Medium Risk location, complete the Individual Travel Health Plan.

If going to a country which is both a Warning/Restriction AND a Travel Health High/Medium Risk location, you only need to complete the Individual Travel Safety Plan.

Traveling with a group?

Groups complete separate safety plans than individuals. If traveling with a group, please confer with your group leader to determine who will submit the Group Safety Plan.
