Emergencies

Whom do I contact if I encounter an emergency while abroad?

The University’s Department of Public Safety is available 24/7/365 and can be reached at +1 734 763-1131 or dpss-safety-security@umich.edu. When calling, identify yourself as an LSA student traveling internationally and the DPSS dispatch will put you in touch with the LSA Emergency Responder on call.

Misc

I still have questions, who can I contact?

Please email LSATravel@umich.edu for further assistance.

Do I have to register travel to Canada, Mexico or the US territories?

Yes. UM students must register travel to any country or territory outside of the 50 United States.

Who determines the destinations on the University’s Travel Warning / Restriction list?

This list is regulated by the International Travel Oversight Committee and is reviewed on both an annual basis as well as whenever an incident occurs (such as an earthquake, hurricane, political event, etc.) that may require a destination’s designation to be changed.

What happens if a student fails to follow the requirements outlined in the LSA International Travel policy?

Students who choose not to complete these requirements will forfeit any and all funding for the experience abroad (including having to pay back money already received), risk losing their academic standing at U-M and may not be permitted to travel on University-related travel in the future.

What are the benefits of registering my travel?

Emergency Communications: Your travel registration enables the U-M to reach you in the event of an emergency – abroad or at home. The travel registry is the University’s official means for sharing urgent health, safety, and security-related information.

UM Travel Health Insurance Coverage: The travel registry provides access to U-M approved travel abroad health insurance. This coverage also includes emergency evacuation in the event of political instability or natural disaster.

What is considered “LSA-related Travel”?

Please see LSA Policy Criteria for more detailed information.

What if I don’t fit into any of the categories under LSA-related travel? Do I still need to register my travel?

It depends. Typically, yes, but it just means that you aren’t bound by the additional requirements of the LSA International Travel policy. For more information on what steps you should take next, please visit the Global Michigan website.
