As the new academic year gets underway and students’ thoughts again turn toward their academic and professional futures, I hope the most dedicated and promising undergraduates consider attending our pre-application recruitment event for doctoral studies in Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan. This year’s recruitment event, which is coordinated with the Rackham Graduate School, the College of Literature, Science, and Arts, and select Humanities programs throughout the university, will be held from Thursday, November 8, to Saturday, November 10. It will feature sessions on the application process, graduate life, career opportunities, and some of the exciting work at the University of Michigan. Participants will have the opportunity to meet our faculty and students one-on-one and in small groups. We are pleased to be able to cover travel expenses, including airfare and lodging, for a limited number of seniors and juniors seriously interested in advanced study in our field.

Advanced undergraduate students should complete this form, where they will need to respond to a brief questionnaire no later than October 10. We will contact them with further information about visiting us for the November event. Students with questions should contact slavic@umich.edu.

A deeply interdisciplinary program, we are committed to fostering a diverse intellectual environment where students can pursue their individual interests and goals. All students admitted to our graduate program receive a robust package of fellowship, teaching, and research support that covers tuition, health insurance, and a generous living stipend during their time in Ann Arbor.

Students will discover that our community works across a variety of cultures (Russian, Ukrainian, Judaic, Polish, Czech, Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Hungarian and Central Asian) and forms of expression (literature, drama, cinema, popular music, graphic arts, architecture), and our recent Ph.D.’s have put their training to use in exciting careers both within academia and beyond. We look forward to the opportunity to meet students and to familiarize them with our extensive offerings.
