The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures approves courses in Russian, Ukrainian, Czech, Polish, and BCS from accredited two and four-year institutions of higher education. Check the Transfer Credit Equivalency website (https://transfercredit.ugadmiss.umich.edu/) to see if the class has already been approved for transfer.
If a class is not listed at all on the TCE, this means that no student has ever submitted it for evaluation. For the Transfer Credit Evaluation Process, please be prepared to provide a course description, syllabus, and representative assignments.
Determinations of courses that satisfy the language requirement will be made by the Slavic faculty advisors. Decisions should be expected within 5 business days.
If you are transferring from a two-year or four-year college, your credits may be listed Russian 101X, Russian 102X, etc.
These credits should not be considered automatically equivalent to Russian 101 and Russian 102. In order to ensure student success in the U-M curriculum, undergraduate advisors place students into the course appropriate for their actual level.
Even if you were to take Russian 101 or Russian 102 at U-M, you will not lose your transfer credits (Russian 101X, 102X, etc.).
We strongly advise you to complete your LSA foreign language requirement as quickly as possible.
All majors and minors should consult faculty advisors before beginning a study abroad program which they hope to use for completion of major or minor program requirements, and should consult their advisors again upon return to Campus.
You may be able to use courses taken elsewhere to fulfill the literature/culture requirements of the Russian major and minor, at the discretion of the faculty advisor. If you wish to use courses you have already taken elsewhere (for example, once you have transferred to UM from another US institution), you should make an appointment with the advisor and provide him/her with course materials, which will establish equivalency to UM courses. If you hope to use for your major or minor literature/culture courses you plan to take in the future at another institution (for example, during study abroad), you should consult the advisor before beginning your program abroad, maintain a careful record of all course work and requirements, and then consult with your advisor on your return.
