On February 27, 2025, we had the honor of hosting Oksana Maksymchuk for a poetry reading from her new collection, Still City: Diary of an Invasion (Pittsburg UP/Carcanet, 2024), followed by a powerful discussion on the role of art and poetry in times of war. Oksana shared how she views her writing as a bridge between the specific events she depicts and the broader global upheavals shaping our world today. She also spoke about her prolific translation work from Ukrainian to English, which plays a crucial role in expanding international awareness of Ukrainian culture and literature. This event was part of the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures' ongoing series focused on Ukraine.
