CES-EUC END-of-SEMESTER LUNCHEONCONVERSATIONS ON EUROPE LECTURE SERIES
Turkey has a unique, albeit unenviable, place in the history of European integration. An associate member of the European Union’s predecessors since 1963, Turkey applied for full membership in 1987 and became an official candidate for accession in 2005. No one can presently tell when, or even if, this process will come to a conclusion and Turkey will join the European Union. No other country in the region has been in the waiting room of pre-accession for this long. In this roundtable discussion we will hear from an anthropologist, an international relations scholar, and a historian who have been researching the relationships between Turkey and “Europe” for years. The viewing of a recent ethnographic documentary on this topic will jumpstart the discussion.
