The fall of the Iron Curtain, the end of the Cold War, and the effects of the secessionist wars of the former Yugoslavia, as well as the liberalization in Albania in 1991 reintroduced Greece into the Balkans (and the Balkans to Greece). They set terms for Greek society’s reappraisal of its place in the new world order, in the new Europe. Twenty years on, this reemergence has marked processes of modernization and Europeanization in the country as well as determined new economies of identity, difference, and citizenship. This lecture will look through the (un)reliable, progressive, or heterotopic lens of contemporary film to explore some of the fault lines behind these changing economies.
