The mission of CEAL-Ride is supported by the LSA Dean's office and the Center receives funding to cover the bulk of the cost of the vehicles that are not supported directly by departments. However, the Budget Dean has requested some cost-sharing to indicate departmental commitment.
Most often this commitment takes the form of a $50 lab fee. That fee does not cover the complete cost of the vehicle rental and gas. For example, there are courses that require a minimum of 2 vans to travel 1 hr and 15 minutes away to support the work of its 14 students once or twice a week. CEAL pays $505/month plus fuel for each van and $15 license check fees for out-of-state students. While CEAL-Ride vehicles are shared with other courses, vehicle use is often clustered in the late afternoon and multiple vehicles must be available to meet need.
$505/month x 4 months =$2020 (does not include the gas cost)
$50 lab fee x 13 students =$650
$650 covers approximately a third of the total cost for one vehicle.
