Hometown: Lake Orion, MI
Major: Public Policy
Internship Placement: Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11)
Why did you decide to do Michigan in Washington?
I wanted to expand my work experience and enhance my knowledge about the American government.
What do you do during a typical day at your internship?
I start by doing press clips for the Congresswoman every morning. We sort through everything of relevance that was published within the last 24 hours and send them out to the staff as well as the Congresswoman. I spend the rest of my day answering constituent phone calls, logging them, and working on any side tasks that are presented throughout the day. I am assigned to one legislative staffer a week and attend briefings on their behalf, work on memos, take notes, etc.
What's something that you're proud of that you've done at your internship so far?
I am proud that I have created good relationships with the staff. Regardless of the learning process, I always know that I can ask for help and be treated with respect.
How has your skill set evolved or changed since you began working on this internship?
My skill set has completely changed this past semester. I have learned so much about the government in a way that only makes complete sense once you see it. I have learned what makes a good intern and what makes a bad intern; the same goes for the rest of the staff. I have learned how to create relationships with higher-ups and earn their respect in the workplace.
What is one fun activity that you have done since being in D.C.?
I found a love for a good cupcake! I never particularly was a fan of cake before now, but being in such close proximity to Baked and Wired has completely changed my life.
What advice would you give to a student interested in Michigan in Washington?
It's okay not to know where to start! I entered this program with barely any experience and just a love for politics and the government. Authenticity and composure go a long way in not only an interview but once you get the job as well. My boss tells me that it wasn't my past experience that got me the job (obviously), but it was the way I carried my personality and authenticity into my interview.
