Why did you decide to do Michigan in Washington?

I felt that MIW would provide an invaluable glimpse into the life I've always wanted to pursue after I graduate from Michigan. Through my passion for public service and my love for Washington DC, I strongly believe that there's no better learning environment for someone like me than to be injected straight into the heart of our democracy.

What do you do during a typical day at your internship?

In my capacity, I support the Office in various ways: assisting Senator Durbin's Appropriations and Energy/Environment legislative teams, attending briefings and hearings, answering phone calls from constituents, and conducting Capitol tours.

What's something that you're proud of that you've done at your internship so far?

I'm incredibly proud to have been involved in establishing the foundation of crucial energy and environmental legislation important to the Senator from addressing excessive PFAS exposure in public drinking water systems to pushing for greater funding on removing lead pipes throughout Illinois.

How has your skillset evolved or changed since you began working on this internship?

I've developed a deeper understanding of the inner workings of Congress and the many complexities of policymaking. I've come to see a more nuanced perspective on how legislative processes unfold while recognizing the many intricate relationships required to advance policy.

Additionally, I've embraced the steep learning curve present on the Hill by exposing myself to policy spaces where I was previously inexperienced including appropriations and energy/environmental issues. This immersion not only equipped me with a stronger understanding of these critical areas but also established lifelong policy priorities for me as my career progresses.

What is one fun activity that you have done since being in D.C.?

Attending the Harris campaign's closing address in the Ellipse.

What advice would you give to a student interested in Michigan in Washington?

My best advice would be to keep an open mind and truly take in what this program, city, and internship has to offer. I came into the program confident that my future career would follow a particular path; now, I'm mulling many different avenues to pursue going forward due to keeping an open mind during my time here. While Washington may move at a million miles an hour, you can use that to your advantage by
