Hometown: Grand Rapids, MI
Major: Communications and Media
Internship Placement: The United States Department of Justice
Why did you decide to do Michigan in Washington?
I decided to do Michigan in Washington because I wanted to be a part of an opportunity to experience my passions beyond the classroom setting. As I have an interest in going into law and continuing with political communications work, this opportunity has helped me figure out what I want to do after graduating and as a career.
What do you do during a typical day at your internship?
Being an intern working at the United States Department of Justice is a genuine honor and pleasure! I am fortunate to be working on various projects and assignments that assist with inquiries from the national news media. I have the opportunity to draft and edit remarks for DOJ leadership, gather news media clips, help with interviews and press conferences, edit and issue news releases on various topics, provide research assistance, and contribute to several other communications projects.
What's something that you're proud of that you've done at your internship so far?
The Office of Public Affairs at the DOJ has allowed me to gain a new style and technique of communication, research, and writing.
How has your skillset evolved or changed since you began working on this internship?
As a previous intern for the Executive Office of Governor Gretchen Whitmer, I had the opportunity to work on the state-level side of communications and am now evolving into the national-level side of communications at the United States Department of Justice. My writing and research skills have advanced, especially in navigating complex legal frameworks and tailoring communications for diverse audiences. This experience has deepened my understanding of government operations and sharpened my ability to craft clear, strategic messages across different levels of government.
What is one fun activity that you have done since being in D.C.?
Since arriving in D.C. one fun activity has been visiting the United States Botanical Garden. However, I’ve also enjoyed touring The White House, the Washington Monument, The National Gallery of Art, and hiking in nature!
