Benninghoff Memorial Fund for Graduate Student Support (702705)

William Benninghoff was a professor of botany at the University of Michigan for 31 years and during that period also served as Director of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens from 1977 to 1986. During his academic career, he taught plant ecology, general ecology, Quaternary paleoecology, and historical plant geography and served as adviser to many doctoral and postdoctoral scholars. Bill was an internationally respected scholar on polar regions whose research in the Arctic focused on the interaction of vegetation and frozen ground, especially permafrost, and later studies that were at the forefront of glacial geological research and the terrain and ecology of Antarctica. His leadership in department policies and programs included the reorganization of the Biology Department, which ultimately became the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.
Anne Benninghoff, too, was an avid botanist who independently pursued research areas of personal interest in addition to her collaboration with Bill on many of his research endeavors. She was an energetic leader of the UM Faculty Women’s Club, Science Research Club, Women’s Research Club and many other organizations within the UM community.
