The LRCCS China Internship Initiative began in summer 2015 with the aim of providing talented U-M students from diverse academic backgrounds the opportunity to spend up to 8 weeks living and working at partner organizations in the Greater China area. These internships offer invaluable professional and cultural learning experiences.
Internships typically last 6-8 weeks from May to August at 25-40 hours per week, though employers will determine exact timing and contact hours in collaboration with the intern.
We hope you’ll join us in crafting new opportunities for students this summer!
To get started, download and fill out the LRCCS China Internship Employer Info Form and return it to china.internships@umich.edu.
Timeline
- September – November: Employers provide internship descriptions
- November – January: Receiving applications from students
- February-mid-March: Candidates selection and interviews
- End-March: Intern placements confirmed. Interns work with employers and support staff to determine logistics and on-site planning for internships.
- April: Pre-departure orientation, health & safety sessions
- May– August: On-site internship
*Note: There is no obligation to accept any candidate. Filling out the form is not a commitment to take student interns, just an indication of interest.
Host Responsibilities
- Work: Provide student interns with meaningful and concrete projects and work plans so that they can learn from the experience.
- Supervision: Interns should have a dedicated supervisor for guidance and support. This includes introducing students to the work culture of your organization and providing regular opportunities to give and ask for feedback.
- Compensation: The internship opportunities through LRCCS China Internship Initiative are unpaid internships. Once a student secures an internship opportunity through the LRCCS China Internship Initiative, LRCCS will provide fellowship to subsidize travel and living expenses for the selected students. Ultimately it is the intern’s responsibility to cover work and living expenses related to their internship. Interns are encouraged to apply for separate scholarships to cover these costs, but their award is not guaranteed.
