Located on the 4th floor of the Hatcher Graduate Library on the central campus of the University of Michigan, the Asia Library holds one of the largest collections of material resources on Asia in the United States. In 1947, the Center for Japanese Studies was established, followed by the Center for Chinese Studies in 1961. As course offerings and degree programs expanded, and the Centers grew from a handful of faculty to several dozen, the Asia Library grew in tandem, collecting and making accessible resources in support of the research and teaching of scholars in these fields. By 2006, the collections had grown to over 789,143 volumes, 43,952 reels of microfilm, 32,243 sheets of microfiche, and 3,487 CD-ROMS. Several special purchases in support of both the Chinese and Japanese collections, along with ongoing support from the University Library, has resulted in significant and steady growth over the past fifty some years. Additionally, a variety of Chinese, Japanese and Korean E-Source materials are available.
