CCS presents Timothy Billings, Middlebury College In 1595 Matteo Ricci composed the first work to be written in Chinese by a European, a treatise on friendship in the classical style which instantly attracted the attention of discerning Chinese literati. This talk discusses the nature of the text and various challenges and insights that arose in the process of preparing its first English edition.
