Dear CSEAS friends,
I was saddened to learn today Lee Anthony Peter (Pete) Gosling passed away peacefully, from a recurrence of lymphoma, at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on December 13, 2023, surrounded by his immediate family. You can read his obituary here.
Pete was a world-class geographer, working on the dynamics of rural development in Southeast Asia. A pillar of the Southeast Asian Studies community at Michigan, Pete helped found the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, and was a fierce champion for Southeast Asia studies both at UM and nationally. The most recent indication of that commitment is the Gosling-Lim Postdoctoral Fellowship in Southeast Asian Studies, housed at the Association for Asian Studies, and hosted at Michigan.
Pete and Linda were the first to welcome me into the Southeast Asian Studies community at UM, and throughout the years they helped build and strengthen that community by opening their home to countless numbers of visiting scholars, faculty, and students. Pete will be deeply missed, and we send our condolences to Linda and his family.
We will circulate information about a memorial service when that is available.
Best wishes,
Allen Hicken
Director, Center for Southeast Asian Studies
