CSEAS has been a longstanding hub of interdisciplinary research for faculty and researchers from a variety of disciplines and professional schools at the University of Michigan (U-M) who are substantially engaged in research and/or teaching on comparative Southeast Asian Studies, one of the Southeast Asian nations (Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Timor-Leste) or have an interest in Southeast Asian Studies. The CSEAS Affiliate Program is designed to reach out to and support alumni, faculty, teachers, scholars, researchers, visiting instructional faculty, visiting scholars, and postdoctoral fellows engaged in research and/or teaching on Southeast Asia and in Southeast Asian Studies.
Eligibility
Those in one of the following three categories are eligible to apply:
- Alumni, e.g., U-M graduates of academic or professional programs engaged in research and/or teaching on Southeast Asia or have an interest in Southeast Asian Studies.
- Scholars from colleges or universities in the Midwest Region (or universities affiliated with the Big Ten Academic Alliance) who are engaged in research and/or teaching in Southeast Asia, including U-M adjunct faculty/researchers.
- Former U-M faculty, visiting instructional faculty, visiting scholars, visiting graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows who are nominated by CSEAS Executive Committee or affiliated faculty.
* Illinois has been recently added to this regional program on the condition that applicants must be nominated by CSEAS Executive Committee or affiliated faculty.
Application Procedures & Deadlines
Submit the following items by email with the subject line “CSEAS Affiliate Program Application” to cseas@umich.edu.
- A copy of your current CV (5 pages or less)
- A statement describing the following points (a total of 1,000 words or less):
- Your accomplishments (publications, policy memos, artwork, etc.) in Southeast Asian Studies
- Your current projects in Southeast Asian Studies
- How you anticipate your affiliation with U-M CSEAS would be useful to both you and CSEAS
Application deadlines: September 30 and March 31 annually.
All complete applications are reviewed by the CSEAS Executive Committee, and applicants will be notified of decisions.
Terms & Benefits
Membership in the CSEAS Affiliate Program will be based primarily on researchers having substantial research interests in Southeast Asia. All affiliates are expected to follow relevant policies and guidelines for use of university resources and conduct. Affiliate membership will be reviewed at the end of every three-year period beginning in by the Executive Committee, who will determine whether to renew or revoke Affiliate status.
CSEAS Affiliate Program members will have:
- Access to CSEAS announcements and communications regarding notices of academic events, job postings, career and research development, and research/funding opportunities.
- Eligibility to have a uniqname (a U-M computing ID).
- U-M alumni are encouraged to keep and use their uniqname (free of charge for limited services) rather than acquire a new one through the CSEAS Affiliate Program; for details, please contact U-M Information and Technology Services.
- U-M alumni are encouraged to keep and use their uniqname (free of charge for limited services) rather than acquire a new one through the CSEAS Affiliate Program; for details, please contact U-M Information and Technology Services.
- Help on getting an MCard (for non-UM-alumni affiliates).
- U-M alumni are encouraged to keep their MCards and renew them on their own. For details, please see the MCard website.
The CSEAS Affiliate Program does not offer or provide office space, phone/fax/computer access, mailboxes, business cards, administrative/translation services, research assistance, or parking permits.
