This grant is offered to support curriculum development related to Southeast Asia. Community college instructional faculty lacking significant Southeast Asian resources within their home institutions are encouraged to apply.  

Award Details

• Visit for up to three days at the University of Michigan
• Consult with area expert faculty if they are available during visit
• Full access to U-M library, museum, and archival resources, including
  • University of Michigan Library, one of the best collections of Southeast Asian materials in translation
  • Bentley Historical Library's large collection of US-Philippine material
  • Ford Presidential Library with its Vietnam war archives
  • Museum of Anthropological Archeology with its Asian Ethnology Collections and Dean C. Worcester Photographic Collection from the Philippines
  • History of Art Southeast Asian Art Foundation Archive
  • University of Michigan Museum of Art Buddhist and Hindu Collection from Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Indonesia
• Expenses—A maximum of three days lodging and food reimbursement (up to federal levels); travel reimbursement (at the federal rate); reproduction costs (up to $30)
  

Requirements

Grant report, to be submitted one month after completing your visit, which details the integration of Southeast Asian content (at least 25%) into courses taught, or new courses developed, along with a brief description of materials collected.

• Send a research proposal: 1-page maximum; should include teaching material sought, curriculum goals, and focus of new course/additional section of existing course. For those seeking to include Southeast Asia content in an existing course, please show how the Southeast Asia content will reach 25% of the total course content
• Submit a budget: use federal per diem rates for the Ann Arbor area and the federal mileage reimbursement rate, if driving

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies, the University Library, and the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan offer a four-week research fellowship to Southeast Asian scholars to use the research resources of the University of Michigan. The fellowship includes international airfare, research funds, housing, and a living stipend while the scholar is in residence in Ann Arbor. The scholar will enjoy research space and computing privileges at the university, as well as assistance from the Southeast Asia research librarian and CSEAS.

Information on U-M collections and other specialized collections on the Philippine-American period, Philippine ethnology and archaeology, the Vietnam War, and other related content are available through:

Included in the award:

• International travel cost for round-trip travel from the scholars’ home to Ann Arbor, Michigan.
• Housing on the U-M campus for up to four weeks
• Health insurance
• Stipend for living expenses and research
  

Scholars must be affiliated with an institution of education in Southeast Asia. Research on any topic relevant to Southeast Asian studies is acceptable, though preference will be given to those whose topics are particularly relevant to the holdings of the University of Michigan. No special allowances or additional funds are available for scholars who choose to bring family members with them.

Applications are due on: May 31. 

Decisions will be made and communicated to the scholars in early June, with final acceptance of the fellowship required by June 30. Fellowships will take place the following academic year.

Submit all materials as one pdf file.  A completed application includes:

• Application Form
• CV
• Letter of affiliation with a Southeast Asian educational institution, specifying status, from the university administration/department head.
• Letter of support from faculty advisor, if scholar is a graduate student.
• Essay, not to exceed 3 pages, detailing 1) the nature of the research to be undertaken 2) the collections to be utilized and 3) expected publications or results of research.
