Based on letters and poems, Total Eclipse depicts the passionate and violent relationship between the 19th century French poets Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud. Their affair begins in 1870 after the newly-married Verlaine finds Rimbaud living on the streets of Paris and invites the 16 year-old to live in his home; the ensuing chaos affords both men the most creative periods of their lives.
