The fourth conference of the STEM-Africa Initiative of the African Studies Center (ASC) builds upon our alliances and past conferences to bring together faculty, scholars, students, and thought leaders in disciplines of science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine (STEM) from the University of Michigan and partnering universities, governments, and communities of African countries.
An objective of this fourth conference is to explore ways to continue to build sustainable partnerships in STEM education and research that will enable discovery of new knowledge, increase educational capacity and quality, and facilitate knowledge transfer for addressing global, regional and community issues. This fourth STEM conference identifies some priority topics to be addressed in keynote, plenary and working sessions.
Specific conference topics identified include:
- Science policy and programming for economic and sustainable development
- Strategic planning for increasing broad access to quality higher education
- Partnering, new alliances and use of African Centers of Excellences and other government or community resources
- Knowledge transfer to move science and technology to wider applications
- Discovery and transfer of discoveries from within the academy to industry
- STEM education that will lead to industrial transformation
While attendance for sessions of the conference is open, presenters are by invitation or by selection after responding to a specific call for paper submission. Lodging and travel information and a preliminary conference program will be available soon.
About Yaoundé: Yaoundé is the capital city of the Central African country of Cameroon. It is unique from other capital cities in the region because of its lush green and hilly setting and cooler air resulting from an elevation of 750 meters above sea level. Thus, the city is a pleasant, friendly and charming place to visit. Yaoundé is located in southern central Cameroon and is the second largest city with an approximate population of 1,430,000.
Museums, galleries and other easily accessible venues offer regional history and art. Dancing and music are important parts of Cameroonian culture, and visitors have many venues to explore once the sun goes down. Nightclubs play a surprising variety of music, including salsa, hip hop, old-school disco and African jams. There are also a large number of restaurants in the capital, serving up traditional dishes and international foods at inexpensive prices.
