Students

African Studies has been a growing field at the University of Michigan. Courses are available in over 30 units across campus, and there are more than 170 faculty affiliates engaged in Africa-related projects, workshops, and research.

MA in International Studies, African Studies specialization

Students interested in a graduate degree in African studies can pursue an M.A. through the Masters in International and Regional Studies (MIRS), designed for students seeking to gain advanced, interdisciplinary knowledge in the field of African studies.

Undergraduate degree and graduate certification

Through the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS), undergraduate and graduate students may pursue an undergraduate specialization and graduate certification in African studies and complete the study of the African languages. 

Students can also study Africa in classes and specially designed projects offered through the Schools of Art and Design, Ross School of Business, Information, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Public Health, Social Work, Information, Music, Theater & Dance, as well as several other departments and schools.
