Kelly Askew Askew Language Study Scholarships

ASC offers scholarships of $1,000 for Swahili or Yoruba language study, offered through the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS). The scholarship will be for a full academic year, and will be paid in two installments of $500 at the end of each semester.

Swahili, or Kiswahili as called by the speakers of the language, is the most widely spoken African language south of the Sahara. It is the official language in Kenya and Tanzania. The University of Michigan offers a comprehensive Swahili language program featuring elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Offered in fall and winter semesters: Elementary Swahili (AAS 115/116); Intermediate Swahili (AAS 215/216 ); Advanced Swahili (AAS 315/316)

Yoruba, a major regional language of West Africa, is spoken primarily in Nigeria and Benin with sizable communities of speakers also found in Togo and Sierra Leone. The language is also spoken in Cuba and Brazil. Two levels of Yoruba are offered each year, and courses are open to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Offered in fall and winter semesters: Elementary Yoruba (AAS 125/517) and Intermediate Yoruba (AAS 225).

Open to all U-M undergraduate and graduate students studying either Swahili or Yoruba at the University of Michigan for one academic year. The following criteria must be fulfilled:

» Two consecutive terms of the appropriate Swahili/Yoruba language study sequence;

» Students must receive a grade of B- or better in a specific semester in order for the award for that semester to be disbursed.

Students must apply by the drop/add deadline of the current term to be considered for the current academic year scholarship.

Interested students should complete and submit the online application form.

The award will be disbursed in the form of two $500 installments at the completion of each academic term and after grades have been submitted and evaluated.
