Leo Sarkisian’s ‘Music Time in Africa’
Leo Sarkisian travelled the continent to produce and record the 'Music Time in Africa' radio show. He documented an enormous amount of diverse African music through his work across the continent. The show was often only played once, in Africa, and never heard again, and the tapes from the show were about to be made inaccessible at a storage facility in the salt mines of Western Pennsylvania. ASC founding director Kelly Askew and U-M colleague Paul Conway intervened in this process, and worked to digitized the show, and make it publicly accessible. This work preserves an important component of African history, and is now available to be heard outside of the continent for the first time.
