Visiting Fellows

The African Studies Center (ASC) hosts scholars from across the African continent through two distinguished fellowship programs. These initiatives reflect ASC’s commitment to academic exchange, research collaboration, and global engagement.

U-M African Presidential Scholars (UMAPS)

Since 2009, the UMAPS Program has supported early- to mid-career faculty from African universities by integrating them into the University of Michigan’s vibrant academic community. Scholars benefit from access to resources, research mentorship, and opportunities for scholarly engagement across a wide range of disciplines—from engineering and public health to literature and economics. The program strengthens international research networks and helps build the next generation of African scholars.

MIDAS/ASC: African Faculty Fellow

ASC and the Michigan Institute for Data & AI in Society (MIDAS) have partnered to support seven postdoctoral researchers from Africa who apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) methodologies to key scientific and engineering challenges. This two-year fellowship program aims to advance scientific breakthroughs through the use of AI, foster the next generation of African and global science leaders, and expand the role of AI within universities in Africa and the University of Michigan research community.
