The African Studies Center (ASC) supports student research and internships in and about Africa through our annual summer research grant program.
As we continue to make decisions and adjustments aligned with public health recommendations amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we are delighted that more of our student grantees are able to travel safely to Africa and conduct their research in person.
ASC distributed 25 awards in 2022, amounting to over $39,000 in support. Of these, 19 awards went towards supporting research, five supported student internships in or relating to Africa, and one supported a student for intensive language study.
Funding went to students from eight different schools and colleges (School of Education; College of Engineering; Law School; College of Literature, Science and the Arts; School of Music, Theater and Dance; School of Nursing; Ford School Public Policy; School of Public Health), and in support of projects focusing on 14 different countries (Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Morocco, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe). Of the awards, 17 went to graduate students, five to students from a professional school, and three to undergraduate students.
Congratulations to all whose projects have been funded in the 2022 competition!
