Founded and administered at the University of Michigan, HathiTrust is an extraordinary campus resource on the cutting edge of preservation, copyright fair use, and innovative scholarship. This special briefing on the present state and future prospects of the HathiTrust Digital Library takes place as part of an international workshop, “African Studies in the Digital Age,” hosted by the African Studies Center November 10-18.
This event is cohosted by MLibrary, HathiTrust, and the University of Michigan School of Information with generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

HathiTrust strives to serve the public good while making it possible for libraries to serve their researchers in new ways. Launched in 2008 by the university libraries of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation and the University of California, today HathiTrust’s more than 100 members continue towards their goal of building a comprehensive archive of published literature from around the world. The collection of over 12 million digitized books from North American research libraries allows the organization to develop collective strategies for managing and developing print and digital collections. In this session Mike Furlough and Jeremy York will provide an overview of HathiTrust’s mission, collections, and organization, and its plans for developing corollary programs in the future.
2:15 to 3:15pm HathiTrust and the Law

This session will summarize the sagas of challenges to HathiTrust (and Google?) regarding large-scale digitization and the delivery of copyrighted materials through non-consumptive research The session should also touch on the Copyright Review Management System. The session will also frame a discussion around the fundamentals of fair use, in part laying the groundwork for the final session of the day.

The final session will discuss the development of digital infrastructure for scholarship, emphasizing HathiTrust and mass digitization as they affect and are affected by scholarly communication and the changing roles of libraries. Libraries, in this formulation, are a crucial piece of infrastructure.
