Welcome from one of LUMA’s Co-Presidents, Edgard Mercado:
“Hello everyone! The Latinx Undergraduate Medical Association (LUMA) is one of the university’s many organizations for students interested in pursuing a career in medicine. LUMA hopes to empower and support Latinx students on their journey towards medical school or any field within healthcare. Likewise, we wish to promote health and wellness within the Latinx community.
The organization was founded in the Spring of 2020, so we're a relatively new but active organization. Although COVID-19 ended up changing many of our projects, we're happy to say that the founding board members have made strides to reach out to the Latinx student body within the pre-health community at the University of Michigan. We host a variety of student development and community-building events such as suturing kit practice, discussions with medical professionals, 1-on-1 mentorship with UM medical students, and potential trips to the national LMSA conferences. We strive to help our members develop through mentorship and leadership opportunities through on-campus and national-level opportunities.
Any student interested in joining LUMA is welcome, and our target audience includes pre-medical and pre-health students. We encourage all allies of the Latinx community to participate!
We can be reached at lumaleadership@umich.edu for any inquiries with regards to involvement. Additionally, our link tree (https://linktr.ee/LUMA_umich) contains information such as LUMA's mailing list, website, Group-me, and monthly newsletter. Also, make sure to check out our Instagram, @luma_umich, for information about upcoming events!”
