What is the Biology Honors Program?
The Program in Biology administers an Honors Program to train students to conduct independent research in the biological sciences. Participating in the honors program allows students to develop their research skills, deepen their understanding of the field, and form productive relationships with faculty and other students. The achievement is noted on the diploma and official transcript.
In addition to completing all the requirements for the major, an honors degree requires:
(1) an overall and major GPA of at least 3.4,
(2) completion of the thesis program application via the Program in Biology web page,
(3) participation in at least two terms of independent research, and
(4) the completion of a significant piece of independent research that is
(a) reported in an honors thesis and
(b) presented in a public forum.
The absolute deadline to apply to declare is the term PRIOR to when you plan to graduate:
Applications are due by the add/drop deadline of the semester before you plan to submit your thesis. (ie. Fall term if you plan to graduate in May.)* However, you should submit your application as soon as you know your project.
Please note that the Honors Thesis ULWR Intent Form is specifically intended for those students who are doing an Honors Thesis and who have declared a major.
Thesis due date is the 1st of the month you plan to graduate (April 1, December 1, August 1)
*Students who fail to meet the application deadline may:
1. complete a research (non-honors) thesis; or
2. if extenuating circumstances prohibited a timely application, petition to request that their late honors thesis application be accepted. Such requests are rarely granted and only in exceptional cases. Petitions may be submitted to gambit@umich.edu and must include:
- 1000-word explanation of the exceptional circumstances
- letter of support from the PI, indicating the student (1) has been working in the lab for a minimum of two terms, and (2) will be able to complete the thesis by the deadline
