WGS 891 is an independent study course designed to give students the opportunity to draft either a prospectus (if taken in the Fall of the fourth year) or a first chapter (if taken in the Fall of the fifth year) under the guidance of their dissertation committee. During the Fall term, the student registers for WGS 891 (3 credits) under the INDI (individual instruction) number of their committee chair and schedules a two-hour discussion of the draft with the full committee by the end of the term. This discussion serves as the preliminary examination in WGS and provides formative feedback from each committee member. The committee chair then assigns a letter grade for WGS 891.
