The Sweetland Center for Writing, in collaboration with Rackham Graduate School, coordinates student-led Dissertation Writing Groups that provide structured support for dissertation writers.  These interdisciplinary peer groups offer opportunities for writers to make regular and meaningful progress on their dissertations.  Participating in one of these groups can help students organize and prioritize writing, sustain focus and effort, set and meet deadlines, and build community and accountability.

The work of a Dissertation Writing Group is to meet as a group of peers to share works-in-progress and organizational strategies with writers from other disciplines. Each group consists of writers in similar stages of their dissertation projects. Groups are organized based on student meeting mode preference (i.e., in-person or remote).

For Fall 2025, DWGs will also be offered for students who identify as neurodivergent and who would like to self-select into peer groups with other neurodiverse dissertation writers.

Dissertation Writing Groups consist of a group of 3-5 peers, including a group leader. To participate, students must be in the writing phase of their dissertations and able to meet together at least eight times during the term to workshop each other’s writing.  Each group determines their own meeting schedules and expectations.
