We are very pleased to announce that Santiago Bukovsky-Reyes has joined the Science Learning Center (SLC) staff as our new Study Group Program Manager.  Santiago will support the Assistant Director in the continued development of the study group program. He will play the central role in all program components including recruitment, training, and supervision of the facilitators, program assessment, and outreach and collaboration with course instructors.

Santiago will also be involved in the planning and execution of some larger SLC initiatives, including our efforts to recruit and retain underrepresented students in the STEM fields, collaboration with the English Language Institute on a co-mentoring program, the Tutor Summit, Science as Art Contest and Exhibition, and the SLC’s 30th Anniversary.

Santiago joins the SLC in this full-time capacity after serving as a grad student assistant to the program for the last year. Santiago has served as a Graduate Student Instructor and Graduate Student Research Assistant here at UM, and a tutor and Undergraduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Colorado. Santiago received the Outstanding Bachelor of Science award from the University of Colorado and recently completed his Master of Science in Environment and Sustainability as a Rackham Merit Fellow.

The Science Learning Center welcomes Emily Pendleton to the team as our new Tutoring Program Manager! Emily will lead the SLC’s tutoring services, including both drop-in and appointment-based tutoring. She will also provide assistance in the coordination of the annual U-M Tutor Summit.

Emily comes to the SLC after working as a Learning Specialist with Student Athlete Support Services at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where she mentored student athletes and supervised a staff of both graduate and undergraduate students. She also led efforts to create the department’s training program, which focused on equipping mentors to help at-risk students build academic skills and pushing high-achieving students to grow academically. Emily also has experience at U-M, where she worked previously as an Assistant Academic Counselor in the U-M Athletic Department. Emily has a master’s degree in Higher Education Student Affairs from Eastern Michigan University, and she is working on a doctorate in higher education.
