Michael Traugott, professor emeritus of communication studies and political science, addressed the relative lack of enthusiasm by young voters for this year's presidential candidates compared to the support shown to Barack Obama in two previous elections.

He says, "His (Obama) broad themes about hope and change, I think stuck a very strong cord amoung young people. But Hillary Clinton carries a lot of baggage from many years of public service and repeated republician attacks. Donald Trump is not very appealing to young people because of his comments about immigrants and muslims."
