Accelerated Master’s Degrees

The Accelerated Master’s Degree (AMD) program through PitE and SEAS is a Master’s program for qualifed Environment majors. Students applying for the AMD may pursue their master’s in areas like Behavior, Education, and Communication; Ecosystem Science & Management; Geospatial Data Science; Environmental Justice; Environmental Policy and Planning; Sustainability and Development; and Sustainable Systems.

There are two Accelerated Master's Degree programs open to undergraduates majoring in Environment:

1. Master of Science in Environment and Sustainability (MS) - Normally a 2 year program - 42 credits

2. Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) - Normally a 3 year program - 62 credits

Eligibility and Requirements

How it Works

The AMD includes 5 to 6 years of study, depending on the degree that you plan to pursue (MS vs. MLA):

- Complete 3 years of undergraduate study in LSA and PitE

- Maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.5 or above

- Apply to the AMD program via the SEAS graduate application in the fall of Junior year

- Finish remaining LSA/Environment major requirements and start courses in SEAS during your fourth year

- Graduate with a BS or BA degree at the end of your fourth year

- Spend the fifth (MS) or sixth (MLA) year finshing your remaining master’s requirements

- Graduate with a MS or MLA degree at the end of your fifth or sixth year

The deadline to apply is January 15.

Admission Process

Fall Semester Junior Year:

- Must meet with PitE Advisor to discuss curriculum planning for the completion of bachelor’s degree

- Plan and submit the PitE major Specialization for approval

- Visit PitE Career Services to get assistance with your resume

- Solicit letter of rec from faculty member

- Visit Sweetland Writing Center to get help with your Statement of Purpose

Winter Semester Junior Year:

- Submit the Rackham AMD application by January 15

- Meet with both the PitE Advisor and SEAS Registrar to complete the AMD Election Form to create a plan of study for the bachelor’s and master’s degree

- Submit to Rackham Graduate School

- An admission decision will be made by March 1

Financial Aid Information

AMD students who are receiving aid (from the University or LSA) will be able to continue to receive that aid until the end of the fourth year.

In the fifth year, AMD students will be able to apply for scholarships through Rackham Graduate School and SEAS, as well as apply for Graduate Student Appointment (GSA) positions throughout the University. Visit the SEAS Financial Aid website for more details.
