Welcome to the Program in the Environment, a jointly managed program between the College of Literature, Science and the Arts and the School for Environment and Sustainability. PitE offers an interdisciplinary major grounded in the liberal arts. Students will gain skills in the natural and social sciences as well as in the humanities. Students majoring in Environment are required to choose a specialization and complete a practical experience.
Take a look at PitE's video below and see what students think about this major!
“PitE required me to step out of my comfort zone and participate in a field experience offering a variety of options and locations. The small community in PitE shrunk the University of Michigan into a close-knit group with unwavering personal responsibility for environmental stewardship.” (James Vandeputte, B.A. 2011, MPA, Indiana University)
“What I like about PitE was the flexibility. I was encouraged to explore topics and interests and then bring them back to an environmental focus. Reflecting back, due to the interdisciplinarity of the major, there are few topics I encounter today that I don't have at least a few insights.” (Stephanie Chen, B.S. 2013, pursuing PhD in Statistics, North Carolina State University)
