About
Erhan Bayraktar is the Susan Meredith Smith Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan, where he has been a faculty member since 2004. He is also director of the interdisciplinary M.S. Program in Quantitative Finance and Risk Management, jointly administered by the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics.
His research develops probabilistic, analytical, and computational methods for decision-making under uncertainty. It spans stochastic analysis and control, applied probability, partial differential equations, and mathematical finance, with particular emphasis on mean-field games, mean-field control, and large interacting systems. His recent work connects these areas with optimization, machine learning, reinforcement learning, and generative models.
Bayraktar’s research has received sustained support from the National Science Foundation, including an NSF CAREER Award and current projects concerning mean-field systems, Wasserstein PDEs, reinforcement learning, and generative models. He received the inaugural SIAG/FME Early Career Prize and has delivered plenary lectures at major international conferences in probability, control, and mathematical finance. He also serves in editorial leadership roles across journals in control, optimization, operations research, mathematical finance, and machine learning.
At Michigan, Bayraktar directs the Quantitative Finance and Risk Management program and organizes the Financial and Actuarial Mathematics Seminar. He has advised and mentored numerous doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers whose careers span universities, research institutions, technology, and the financial industry.
