The institute’s museum-quality gallery has gained national attention for the high quality of its exhibitions and arts programming. Generous support enables us to bring regional, national, and international artist to the institute to actively engage with the campus and community.
The Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts was established in 1989 by Paula and Edwin Sidman with the goal of promoting discourse between creative and performing artists and scholars in the humanities. The Institute primarily supports a visiting artist residency and exhibition on a bi-annual basis with proceeds from the endowment. Each artist that is invited has formal and informal conversations with faculty and the Ann Arbor community as well as guest lectures in classes across campus. The artist also meets with students who come to the exhibition through their classes when instructors integrate the exhibition into their curriculum.

The Efroymson Emerging Artist in Residence is supported by the Efroymson Family Fund at the behest of Jeremy Efroymson. The Efroymson Family Fund, a fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF) has awarded a grant of $25,000 each year since 2017 to the institute. Each year an emerging artist is commissioned to create a new work of art as part of a full-scale exhibition at the institute with a two to four week residency and engagement with faculty and students.

The Kidder Residency in the Arts was established by Mary and Robert Kidder. From 2011 through 2016, the Kidder Residency provided support for a commissioned exhibition and artist residency. National and international artists garnered regional and national media attention through their institute exhibitions in addition to fostering productive exchanges between and among students, faculty, the visiting artists themselves and the broader public.
