Digital Humanities Summer Institute

Now accepting applications from graduate students for grants to attend the Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI) in Victoria, BC, Canada. The deadline for applications is November 20, 2023 at noon (12 pm).

The Institute for the Humanities will provide funding for up to five humanities graduate students to attend the DHSI from June 3-7 or June 10-14, 2024 at the University of Victoria, Canada. Participants may choose to attend one or two weeks of the Institute. Each week will include skills training workshops as well as a selection of colloquia, “unconferences,” panels, and institute lectures.

The list of this year's courses, as well as other information about the program, can be found at dhsi.org/on-campus-courses2024/. This year's course offerings include topics such as race, social justice and the digital humanities, sound and the humanities, fundamentals of text encoding, video poem as pedagogy, queer digital humanities and intro to computation for literary studies,  among others.

Grants will cover the registration fee for one week and provide $500 in reimbursement towards travel. These grants require matching support from the applicant’s home department. We anticipate awarding five grants for summer 2024. Grant awards will be based on the plan of study, including the statement of interest and rationale for participation.

Please note: DHSI is also offering a number of individual scholarships for the Summer Institute. These scholarships are open to all, and cover course costs with the exception of a small, non-refundable administration fee (students $150, non-students $300). For more information about this opportunity, please visit their website

Eligibility

Students enrolled in doctoral programs in LSA humanities departments at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor campus, are invited to apply.

Criteria for funding include: relevance of the course offerings to the applicant’s dissertation or collaborative project, need for (further) training pursuant to research for that dissertation or related project, and the applicant’s status in their graduate program. Students who have not received an Institute for the Humanities DHSI grant will have priority over those who have.
