Reciprocity in the Humanities Internship Program

The Institute for the Humanities is collaborating with the Rackham Graduate School to offer U-M graduate students internships in the humanities through our Reciprocity in the Humanities program. The 2026 inaugural year will offer internships with three community partners: Progressive Art Studio CollectivePrison Creative Arts Project, and the African American Cultural History Museum.

This program offers a funded and facilitated opportunity to:

  • Apply your humanistic skills and training in new ways
  • Contribute to an organization addressing a vital community need
  • Develop new skills and experiences
  • Explore unfamiliar career paths.

The three community partners/internship opportunities are:

  • Progressive Art Studio Collective: Conference organizing including fundraising, grant writing and logistical/organizational work.
  • Prison Creative Arts Project: Grant writing, fundraising, and participating in the selection committee for their fall exhibition.
  • African American Cultural History Museum: Community-engaged historical research to support their mission to research, collect, preserve, and interpret African American history, resulting in public-facing materials that connect local histories to broader Michigan and national democratic movements.

Complete details about each internship and application information.

Support for this program is provided by The Mellon Foundation through the Humanities Without Walls Consortium.
