Andrew Mills

Andrew teaches intermediate and advanced German language and literature. His teaching covers a broad range of topics and has included courses on 19^th-century honor violence, the Anti-Semitic image of the Jew in the Austro-German literary and cultural imagination, religion in German society, the German experience of warfare, advanced translation, the Grimms' fairy tales, and honeybees and beekeeping in German culture and society. Andrew’s 2011 publication in the Germanic Review examines the notion of Satisfaktion in 19^th-century German culture and society, and aims to establish a concise understanding of the term for the study of German-language fiction. Other published essays examine the concept of career opportunism amongst Third-Reich entertainment musicians and the notion of total mobilization in Germany and Japan. Other research projects address far right-wing Landserheft publications in the age of an all-volunteer Bundeswehr, as well as the ongoing popularity of traditional Mensur fencing violence in German university fraternities. Andrew is also the apiary faculty advisor for the University of Michigan's student beekeeping club, UMBees.
