The program couples Sibelius’ songs and pieces with other cello/piano music from his era. Folk music influences from around the world, and particularly modality and other scales are present in all works. The Debussy Sonata (1915), the DeFalla Suite Populaire Espagnol (1914) and Sibelius’ Four Pieces Op.78 (1915) were composed within a year of each other. Influenced by the composers Bartok and Stravinsky, the Rautio Divertimento (1955) was composed just two years before Sibelius’ death.

The Signe Karlström Events, organized by the Scandinavian Program in the Department of Germanic Lanugages and Literatures, are held in memory of Mrs. Signe Karlström, who moved to Detroit from Sweden in 1920. Signe was very active in the Swedish community and a loyal supporter of the Scandinavian Program. Signe´s son, Olof Karlström, and his wife Olivia P. Maynard have continued his mother´s support of the Scandinavian Program, contributing significantly both to the Signe Karlström Fund and supporting scholarships, academic exchanges, and internships for students in Sweden. We are very grateful to them for their support.

This concert is also sponsored by the Finlandia Foundation, the FCA, and SWEA Michigan.
