WCEE-Release Peace Fellowship (Winter 2027)
Through its partnership with the Hague-based NGO Release Peace, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia (WCEE) offers a fellowship for University of Michigan undergraduate and graduate students to work with professional editors and publish an article of 1,000 words in Release Peace magazine.
Projects may explore the cultural, historical, political, social, or artistic themes related to peace, security, and human rights in Europe and Eurasia. Undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines in the social sciences, humanities, and arts are encouraged to apply. See below for articles by past fellows.
* One award will be reserved for a project on the art and life of artist Felix Lembersky, as related to WCEE’s exhibition The Art of Memory. Students could (but are not limited to) explore such themes as art and repressive regimes, art and revolution, art and war, the Holodymyr, and the Holocaust/Babyn Yar.
Fellows receive a $1,000 stipend and editorial mentorship to produce polished, accessible writing for publication.
Recipients will be automatically eligible for Release Peace’s The Hague Summer School 2027 (read about 2026 session) and receive a $600 discount on the summer school’s standard tuition fee of $3,300. In addition, students should apply for WCEE summer funding to cover up to $5,000 of program-related expenses.

Eligibility Criteria
Open to U-M Ann Arbor undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and professional school students, regardless of citizenship, enrolled in a full-time degree program.
- Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.5.
- Applicants must have a demonstrated academic interest in Europe and/or Eurasia.

- Statement of purpose (approximately 500 words) detailing the applicant’s interest and knowledge of the subject in relation to Europe and/or Eurasia and proposing one or two relevant topics for the Release Peace magazine

Ethical Guidelines
- Fellows must uphold the highest standards of academic integrity. Instances of plagiarism or unethical conduct will result in disqualification and stipend withdrawal.
- Articles must be original and not previously published.
