CJS is home to the longest-running Japanese film series in the world. Our earliest records of the CJS Film Series start in 1975, but locals tell us the center has been showing films as early as the 1960s. Over the years, we have held over 650 film screenings and hosted great filmmakers like Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, Kazuhiro Sōda, Kijū Yoshida, Kaori Momoi, Masato Harada, and many, many more. We have held special events at the Michigan Theater, such as silent films with benshi accompaniment and an on-stage dialogue between directors Kazuo Hara and Michael Moore. Our annual film series now occurs during the winter semester, from January to April.
Attendance is free and open to the public! No prior registration or tickets are required, and seating is first-come, first-served.
