Toshio Iizuka, a former member of Ogawa Pro, will be here for a Q&A. Ogawa Productions, known as Ogawa Pro, was a documentary film collective founded by Ogawa Shinsuke and others in 1966. They covered many radical political movements, but are most known for the seven film series that followed the Narita Airport dispute in Sanrizuka where the crew lived and protested with the farmers. The collective later relocated to Magino, a small village in Yamagata, where they farmed and continued their filmmaking until the early 90s. Iizuka will share stories of this extraordinary film collective and his experiences.
About the Speaker:
Toshio Iizuka started at Ogawa Pro in 1968 as an assistant director. He was one of the last to leave the collective right before Ogawa’s death in 1992. Iizuka went on to make films on Jomon archeology. He has a new film on opera titled, Taking on Puccini: Operatic Life of Okamoto Takao (2012).
