In conjunction with Complicite and Setagaya Public Theatre's production of Shun-kin, this panel discussion contextualizes the theatrical production, probing into Junichiro Tanizaki's aesthetics and director Simon McBurney's ingenious interpretation. Panelists will discuss Tanizaki's literature, contemporary Japanese theater, and the creative process behind the production. Panelists include Professor Cody Poulton, University of Victoria; Professor Ken Ito, University of Hawaii; and actor Yoshi Oida. The panel will be moderated by Professor Jonathan Zwicker, Director of the U-M Center for Japanese Studies.

The incredible UK-based theater company Complicite and Setagaya Public Theatre present Shun-kin in Ann Arbor's Power Center. Performed with the daring, delicate, and surprising visual imagery that has become Complicite's trademark, this play of passion, devotion, power, and sacrifice is based on the writings of Jun'ichiro Tanizaki.
