Thursday, November 10, 2011
5:00 AM
Room 1636, School of Social Work Building, 1080 South University, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1106

Satoko Shimazaki (Assistant Professor, Japanese, University of Colorado-Boulder)

Tsuruya Nanboku IV's "Tokaido Yotsuya kaidan" ("Ghost Story at Yotsuya," 1825), which features the disfigured ghost of Oiwa, is one of the most senstational and visually oriented plays in the kabuki repetoire. At the same time, its scripts have been more extensively studied than those of any other kabuki play. This talk shows how performances intended to delight and frighten the eyes gradually came to be "textualized" and subjected to the practice of reading in the early 20th century.
