The African Studies Center (ASC) at the University of Michigan is pleased to announce the return of Omolade Adunbi as director and to welcome Pamela Jagger as the new associate director.

Omolade Adunbi Returns as Director

On July 1, 2025, Professor Adunbi returned to ASC following a semester-long Fulbright sabbatical dedicated to teaching and research. A scholar of political and environmental anthropology, his recent work has focused on climate politics, democracy, and activism in Nigeria.

Under his leadership, ASC has expanded its programming, supported more UMAPS and MIRS fellows, and strengthened interdisciplinary collaborations across campus. In the year ahead, Adunbi plans to deepen ASC’s impact through new partnerships, expanded student opportunities, and a continued focus on critical areas, including the environment, public health, and the arts.

Pamela Jagger Joins as Associate Director

ASC also welcomes Professor Pamela Jagger of the School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) as associate director. A political economist with extensive research experience in sub-Saharan Africa, her work focuses on energy access, environmental governance, and rural livelihoods.

She leads U-M’s Forest Use, Energy & Livelihoods (FUEL) Lab and co-directs a National Science Foundation-funded project on energy poverty in Southern Africa. Her expertise will strengthen ASC’s work at the intersection of climate, sustainability, and development.

Looking Ahead

Together, Adunbi and Jagger bring a shared commitment to interdisciplinary research, student support, and global engagement. Their leadership marks an exciting chapter for ASC as it continues to advance scholarship and deepen connections with African partners.

We look forward to Professor Adunbi’s continued leadership and to working with Professor Jagger in her new role.
